Munich airport to train station travel time

Hello. My husband and I are flying into Munich and headed via train to Salzburg. Our flight lands at 6:15 pm. How much travel time should we allow between the airport and train station? From what I have seen, trains arrive every 10 minutes and the trip is about 45 minutes? Would two hours between flight and train leaving the main Munich train station be sufficient time?

Actually, if you are going to Salzburg on a Bayern Ticket, take the S-bahn from the airport to Munich Ost station where you will connect to the Meridian train to Salzburg. Those trains go every hour, so just jump on the first available train.

There are two S-Bahn lines that connect from the airport terminal to the central train station (Hauptbahnhof), and they depart at roughly 20-minute intervals. The S1 line goes counter-clockwise around the north and west perimeters of the city to the Hbf and is scheduled to take 46 minutes. The S8 line, clockwise around the east side, is a little shorter, and is scheduled for 41 minutes to Hbf.

Along the way the S8 stops at Ostbahnhof (called "Munich East" in the bilingual station announcements on the train), 31 minutes from the airport. There, as Sam mentioned, you can connect to the Salzburg train.

If you are taking either the Meridian regional train (which you can use with a Bayern-Ticket) or a EuroCity express train, you can catch one of them at Munich Ostbahnhof and the S8 is the fastest way to get there. There are also RailJets to Salzburg, but they leave only from the Hauptbahnhof. RailJets are a little faster because they don't make any stops in Germany.

Why do you need a time estimate? Are you planning on making a reservation? I don't think that is wise if you are arriving on a flight to the airport, particularly a trans-Atlantic one. I've been an hour late arriving in Germany from the US three times out of ten trips.

Just buy a Bayern-Ticket at the airport and take the first S8 to Ostbahnhof, then catch the next Meridian train on track 8 at Ost.
