Just wondering what is recommended for traveling between the Munich airport and the city center (Marianplatz area)

Take the S-Bahn. It stops at Marienplatz.

The S1 and S8, which leave from opposite sides of the platform at the station, both go to Marienplatz.
It doesn't really matter which one you take. They go around and come into town from different directions, but the get to the same places. The S8 is faster to Marienplatz, but it leaves later, so the S1 will actually get you there 2 minutes sooner. Take whichever one is the next one leaving.
