What si the best way - arriving from San Francisco to Munich and need to get to Salzburg by train.
Could someone tell me how to navigate. Thanks ahead of time.
By best way, do you mean fastest, least expensive, or most luxurious?
The least expensive way, and usually the fastest, would be to take an S-Bahn to Munich Ostbahnhof (east rail station) and catch a regional train from there to Salzburg.
You can do this with a Bayern-Ticket for 23€, 28€ for two people. It covers both the S-bahn and the regional train.
The Munich S-Bahn station is right across the plaza from Terminal 2, where you will likely arrive. Look for the big green circle with the white 'S'. There are ticket automats on the platform, and they can be made to display in English. Buy a Bayern-Ticket for the number of people in your party, 23€ for the first person, 5€ more for each extra person up to 5, total. Take the S8 (left side of platform) to Munich Ostbahnhof, go out to track 8, and board the next regional train (RE) to Salzburg.
I've taken the train as Lee had suggested (a few years ago).
My recollections are that it was pretty straightforward & easy.
If memory serves, I had some transfers (one?) along the way. The only transfer that I can remember also had some time to kill, so I grabbed a coffee and a currywurst in the station for brunch.

The S8 from Munich airport leaves every 20 minutes; the regional train to Salzburg leaves Ostbahnhof once an hour, so sometimes you have only a few minutes wait, sometimes over a half hour.
Thank you, this is exactly what we needed. Now after a long flight we know the way to Salzburg. Thanks again for the details.
