Munich Airport to City-Center Transportation Late Arrival

We are arriving around 10p into MUC …, 3 of us, wanting to get to Hotel Am Markt. With luggage and one of our travelers with some mobility challenges—in that walking with luggage for distance can be hard (that coupled, with traveling all day, I'm concerned). I read where taxi's are pretty spendy. If we take subway S-8 to Marienplatz, I am wondering how far the walk is to Hotel Am Markt. Anyone know?

It's about a 40-minute ride on the S8 from the airport terminal to Marienplatz. When you arrive at the underground Marienplatz stop, you will take an escalator or lift up to street level. There is construction going on in that underground station now, so things are a little torn up and you might have to walk a couple hundred feet further than usual to find an escalator or lift. But signage is good, and you should have no trouble finding the Ausgang (exit).

Walking from Marienplatz to Hotel am Markt is only about 300 meters. Google Maps calls it a four-minute walk. Walk east past the brilliantly-illuminated Ludwig Beck store and the tall tower of the Altes Rathaus (photo here); cross the street and walk on the right side of the street called Tal, along the left side of Heilig-Geist-Kirche (photo here). At the far end of the church (which is beautiful inside) is Heiliggeiststraße. Turn right there, walk south to the end of the block, and you're at the hotel.

If walking that distance is difficult for your group, there are usually several taxis right there at the east side of Marienplatz, as in the photo. A ride that short should not be very expensive.

Have a wonderful trip!

Actually, two S-Bahn lines (the S1 and the S8) serve the airport at 20 minute intervals, coming into town from opposite sides. Although the S1 leaves the airport 13 minutes earlier than the next S8, it takes 12 minutes longer to get to Marienplatz. So it really doesn't matter much which one you take (they leave from opposite sides of the platform in the station at the airport). If the S8 is the next one leaving, definitely take it, but if the S1 is leaving next, you'll have the choice of taking it, spending longer to get to Marienplatz, but getting there earlier, or waiting longer (13 more minutes) on the platform, but only getting to Marienplatz a minute later. Where do you want to spend the time, in the train or on the platform?

The other consideration, the S1 comes into the first underground track level, the S8 comes in one level lower, so it takes a little longer to get out of the station (although there are escalators directly from lower level to the ticket level, directly under Marienplatz.

When we arrived in Munich one year ago, the S-Bahn stations under Munich (including Marienplatz) were closed on weekends due to construction of the new S-Bahn tunnel under town, but they seem to be done with that phase, so your arrival day shouldn't matter.

At least as of when I was there last month, there was construction going on in the first underground levels of both Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof -- barricades, temporary walkways and walls, etc., but they were open and operational every day, including weekends and holidays.
