Munich airport connection on separate ticket - can I make this flight?

My wife and I are flying into Munich from the US in April on our way to Dubrovnik via Lufthansa (United joint flight number). Arriving MUC at 12:40 PM. A direct Lufthansa flight departs same terminal at 2:30PM. I assume I'll have to claim bags, exit and reenter/check in. Is it likely I can make that all happen in the time allotted?

I opted to not book the entire trip on one ticket. The difference in price was $1000, due in part to the fact we are flying the overseas part in Business class.

Does anyone have any experience with turnaround times with this approach?

Thanks in advance

I've gambled like this many times. You will make it as long as the first flight is on time.

But just budget for a hotel stay in Munich and to buy a ticket for the next day if you want to fly non stop to Dubrovnik.

I only see one non stop a day in April at 14:30 to Dubrovnik from Munich.

As Jazz & Travels noted, be prepared to buy a new ticket if your incoming flight is late.

Also not you will go through immigration in Munich as well as having to collect your bag and then security.

Thanks. It is starting to feel like too much of a risk. If I assume I'd make it and don't, I'd lose whatever prepaid hotel accommodations I'd make in Dubrovnik, lose the airfare, plus add the cost of a hotel in Munich..... Sounds like I need to reorder my itinerary

Since both flights are Lufthansa you should be able to get your bags checked through.
I am a bit puzzled at the price difference though. For a Munich - Dubrovnik flight I do not expect business class to be 1000$ more expensive, as there is not real business class on European routes anyway.

Since I did not book the trip through to DBV on one ticket, they won't check the bags through. The cost difference to book it directly through to DBV was roughly $1000 even with the MUC to DBV in economy class. Dynamic pricing I guess!

Good Luck, you might make the second flight.

Personally, I would not have picked flights with less than two hour connection.

In 2022 we used separate tickets to fly to Amsterdam and back, then tickets to fly to East Africa for a safari. We planned more than a full day between flights. We stayed at the Hilton in Amsterdam Airport and recovered from the jet lag. We had to pay $300 for the hotel, but we saved $1500 on the separate flights. Also, in returning to Amsterdam, we spent a week touring there before flying home.

One of our hard and fast rules for this type of travel is to overnight at or near the airport where your first flight terminates. All you need is for your inbound flight to delayed by a few minutes, then add in passport control, claim bags, recheck bags, clear security etc for this to go haywire real fast. I suggest you do a cost comparison on a same ticket flight to DBV versus overnighting in Munich plus purchasing new tickets to DBV. I imagine that the $1000 saved will disappear real fast.

The reason for our rule is that we had an 8 hour situation between two flights booked on separate tickets and we did not make it.

Since I did not book the trip through to DBV on one ticket, they won't
check the bags through.

That is not a given. I have had my bags checked through on flights where I did have different tickets (in this case from LH and Tap). Within Star Alliance they actually do check through if possible, even on separate tickets. Call LH and ask.
