Munich Airport and Train Hotel

For my first and last night hotel, I like to stay by the airport with a hotel that has a shuttle as I fly standby. Does anyone have a good hotel for 3 people by the airport.

Also, I know train stations are not the best areas to stay in, but does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel? We have found one called any Deutscher Kaiser but no experience staying there. We are going to take the train from Munich to Prague before returning to Vilshofen to begin a river cruise.

I am a business traveler so have had good luck with Holiday Inn Express hotels at the airports.

Thank you very much for any advice as we will be traveling at the end of October.

Hotel Victory, at Therme Erding. Only about 15 minutes from the airport by taxi. I think there's also direct bus service, but I'm not certain.

Novotel Munich Airport was great for us this June. Bus 635 runs daily every 20 min. from a stop right in front of the hotel to the terminals between 4 am and midnight - about 5 min. to T1, 10 min. to T2.

Like was previously mentioned, you have Hotel Novotel in the airport property. There's also a Marriott closeby in Fresling. Other inexpensive properties the Arcadia Hotel and the Hotel NH Muchen Airport.
You can go on GoogleMap.com and expand it by hitting "+++" and click on the hotels. Many properties will pop up with the approximate prices showing.

Kathy,

If you want a Hotel near Munich station, you could have a look at Hotel Royal. The streets outside the hotel are a bit "colourful", but inside the hotel is really nice and very comfortable (and they serve a great breakfast). It's only about a five minute walk to Munich Hbf.

It doesn't look like there is a direct bus from Therme Erding, but there is one from the Erding Bahnhof (S). That bus takes 34 to 38 minutes and runs every 40 minutes. The bus from Freising Bahnhof to the airport takes 21 minutes and runs every 20 minutes in the morning. Erding Bahnhof to Munich Flughafen is 5,40€/P; Freising to the airport is 2,70€.

There are plenty of places to stay in Freising. Here is a directory, in English. Unless you speak German, you probably can't stay in the place I stay in, but I would suggest two other places near the train station, Bayerischerhof or zur Gred. Zur Gred has been recommended in the past by people on this forum who have stayed there; Bayerischerhof has a shuttle to the airport.

Kathy, I would like to suggest the Hilton City Centre Hotel as a good choice for the train station. It is not in the train station neighborhood, but you access it from the S-Bahn only 3 stops from the train station. There is an entrance into the hotel directly from the S-Bahn station. You can get there in 5 minutes from the train station, about the same amount of time as walking somewhere from the train station. There is currently a 30% off summer sale going on.

We recently stayed at Hotel Metropol which is very close to the train station. Rooms have all just been renovated, it's very clean and their breakfast is great with numerous choices. We booked a package that also included transportation within the city. http://m-privathotels.com/metropol-en.html

We have stayed at the Bayerischerhof and zur Gred that Lee mentioned in Freising. Staying in Freising has become a traditional last night stop for us. The Bayerischerhof is nicer but zur Gred is less expensive. They are respectively about 15 and 10 minutes from the train station from which you can catch the bus to the airport or a taxi. Freising is nice small town with a Gasthaus that serves a good traditional fare: the Weissbräu Huber.

Visits to either the Weihenstephan Brewery or the Domberg (Cathedral on the Hill) are worthy last day stops.

In 2012, I spent a pleasant final evening in the Biergarten at Weihenstephen before flying home the next morning.

I second the recommendation of the other person on this thread that recommended Hotel Royal. It is located within easy walking distance of the train station. You can also easily walk to the Marienplatz and the rest of the center of town from there. As mentioned, the street itself is a little "colorful", but perfectly safe.

The inside of the hotel is very nice, there is a pretty decent buffet breakfast included, and it is very reasonable.

I know you said you prefer to stay by the airport due to flying on stand-by, however, also wanted to share that Lufthansa has a bus that runs from the airport to both the city center and the train station. It runs every 20 minutes, and the cost is around 10 euros per person one way.

When we were in Munich a few years ago, we used the Lufthansa bus, which took us from the airport to the train station, and then it was a quick walk to the Hotel Royal. We are going to Munich again at the end of October, and will be doing the same thing again. Very convenient!

If I were staying in Munich, near the Hauptbahnhof, I would prefer the S-Bahn to the airport. There is a single platform in the Hauptbahnhof tief (S-Bahn) station, and the trains to the airport come every 10 minutes on average. The S1 to the airport will be on track 2, Richtung (direction) Pasing. The S8 will be on the opposite track, 1, Richtung Ostbahnhof. Just take the first one to the airport, regardless of direction. Just stand on the platform and watch the overhead arrivals sign. 60% of the time, the next one will be the S8, and it will take 40 minutes.

The trains almost always run on time. In the morning, during rush hour, the buses can be delayed in traffic. (Note, the bus website says it take approx. 45 minutes to get to the airport from the Hbf, but the schedule allows 1h10min from the Hbf until the bus departs from the first stop at the airport.)

The bus fare is 10,50€ adult/ 5,50€ child, 6-14 years, no group discounts. If you have 3 adults that's 31,50€; if one's a child, it's 26,50€ for your party. An MVV Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte will cover up to three people (up to 5 actually) to the airport for 22,30€.

If you are arriving at the airport and coming into town, the MVV Tageskarte will also cover all of your travel by an MVV conveyance in Munich for the rest of the day.

The bus has an advantage timewise, but not pricewise, if you are staying in Schwabing North, near the Englischer Garten. The bus stops there on it's way to/from the airport.
