Almost 70 hubby and I are flying into Munich three nights before cruising the Danube out of Regensburg. Goal one is to adjust our body clocks and recover, lol, and see some cute towns. Stay in Munich or stay in another town before heading to the cruise?? We are mostly into quaint street walking and al fresco dining. Early July. He is a car enthusiast as well. TIA!
You should be looking into...
FREISING (10 minutes from the airport)
LANDSHUT (on the way to Regensburg from Freising)
REGENSBURG ITSELF (Germany's best-preserved medieval town)
Munich would be 45 train minutes from MUC airport and in the opposite direction from Regensburg.
If he is a car enthusiast, he would enjoy visiting the BMW Welt and Museum in Munich. It's easy to get to from the Munich CBD.

So if you want to visit it, it's best to stay in Munich.
Also, if you have never been to Munich, why not visit? You can do quaint street walking and al fresco dining in the Munich old town. Take a walking tour of the Munich old town. Eat at an outdoor biergarten or visit the Englischergarten and eat and drink beer at the outdoor Chinese pagoda.
