multi city advice needed!

Seeking your advice! Gotta see many cities in 2 weeks professionally.

Rostock, Leipzig, Jana, Chemnitz, Regensburg, Stuttgart, Hamburg.

Options: 10 day German rail pass vs. pre-planned specific train fares, vs. walkup fares vs. rent car

The 25% summer promotion expires just as I arrive. Is it worth paying full-retail price for this pass, $480?

Many thanks for your reply

If you are only doing city centres a car is a liability. a train is much more convenient.

I assume you mean this German Rail Pass at €304 for 10 days second class. There looks to be no surcharge for IC/ICE trains, so it looks good value for 7 destinations in 10 days (average €43 per destination). But €304 sounds less than the price you quoted (is that US$?)
You need to go to the German Railways website and cost each journey to see if it is more or less than the price for the 10-day pass.

Avoid "walk up" fares if possible, it is always cheaper to buy ICE and IC tickets in advance (2-3 months), but you then have to pick your train when you book. With "walk up" fares you are paying for the flexibility to decide which train on the day.

Hi,

You'll like Jena and Leipzig...Jena if you're into science and history. It's much better to stay in Jena or Leipzig when visiting Jena, saves on the time than doing it as day trip from Berlin.

A 5 day in a month GRP is 222 euro. That is about 45 euro per day. Use it on the longer journeys where the "walkup" price is more than 45 euro, and buy tickets for the short haul trips which will be less than that amount. Hamburg-Rostock is 35.50, Leipzig-Chemnitz is 17.40, and Chemnitz-Jena is 25.50. Assuming you will fly in and out from one place like Frankfurt. That way you have the best price and full flexibility.
