MUC to Guarda Switzerland (near Davos)

We will be driving from MUC to Guarda Switzerland which is just before Davos. Any suggested places to stop for the night on the way? It looks to be about a 4 hour drive.
Any suggestions are most welcome. Thank you

Ehrwald, Austria at the base of the Zugspitze.

Leaving aside the well-known places like Lindau: In Germany, Ravensburg and Weingarten (a 25 km deviation from the A96 exit Wangen to the west), the former a pretty medieval imperial town, the latter a pompous monastery complex in Italian baroque style (an interesting contrast to the Bavarian baroque of Ottobeuren).

In Austria, Feldkirch or Damüls in Vorarlberg, situated at 1500 metres in beautiful mountain landscape east of the (Austrian) Furkajoch (exit 36 Feldkirch Nord from the Austrian A14). Return via the Faschinajoch to Feldkirch and from there through Liechtenstein to the Swiss autobahn towards Landquart.

Another vote for Ehrwald (or neighbouring Lermoos, Biberwier). The route that the second poster suggested is a detour and you would need stickers for the motorways in Austria and Switzerland.

When driving from Ehrwald to Guarda take the state street from Imst to Landeck (just a few kilometres) to avoid buying the sticker for the motorway.

Ehrwald I think is an underrated place. You may not realize it but the Sonnenspitz mountain in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is the subject of many old paintings. It can be expensive here in the winter and where you care to stay. A walk across the golf course between Ehrwald and Lemoos is one of my favorites. Mittenwald, DE and Seefeld in Tirol maybe? Imst is OK if you find a nice place away from traffic. Closer to your destination is Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis.

Another question for those familiar with this region...
Does the drive from Munich to Guarda go through any long tunnels?! Im a bit clostraphobic! Not a really big deal but I like to avoid them if it makes sense.

Again many thanks. We are really looking forward to seeing this area for the first time.

Ehrwald to Guarda there are a couple. First is immediately leaving Ehrwald, the 3 km Lermooser Tunnel and there appears to be a drive around on secondary roads. The second is past Zams, the 7 km Landecker Tunnel, turning up the Inn Valley. This tunnel requires an Austrian vignette. Again, there is a drive around on secondary roads from Landeck.

There is no tunnel past Ehrwald. Coming from Garmisch-Partenkirche you turn left and drive right through Ehrwald, then Biberwier without any tunnels.

However, be careful after Fernpass, the direct road takes you around Nassereith through two tunnels. If you leave the main road and drive through the village Nassereith you avoid these.

If you follow my earlier recommendation not to take the motorway (which requires the sticker) between Imst and Landeck you drive right through Landeck and avoid the tunnel after Zams.

Hi Everyone
So I think the Ehrwald area is a good one in terms of location.
I seem to be having a hard time finding a suitable lodging place!
We are two couples looking for a one night stay. We would rather not pay over $200 for a room. Two separate rooms.
Any favorite places?
Thanks again for any thoughts
Nigel

When are your travelling? Peak season?

I made a dummy booking/research on their website www.zugspitzarena.com and it came up with a couple of rooms for about 100 Euro per night.

Go to that website I posted (English version available) and use their online booking machine. It came up with:

HAUS ALPENGLÜHEN
Ehrwald
Apartment 8 (Alpenrose) 96 Euro and
Apartment 10 (Teufelskralle) 106 Euro
located right on the main street, so perfect for you.

Another option is Apartment Anni in nearby Lermoos, 2 bedrooms, 106 Euro, no online booking, only sending a request.
