I'm planning a trip to Bavaria in late May and will be working my way through the Dolomites after that. I'd like to spend some time visiting Neuschwanstein and Hohenscwangau castles and then spend that night away from the fray in a more remote location in the nearby mountains. We are traveling by car so have a lot of flexibility. Any recommendations for a quiet, remote place to stay in the mountains within 20-30 miles or so of the castles would be appreciated, whether it's in Germany or Austria. If the only thing in the immediate area is the guesthouse we are staying in, that's perfectly fine with me.

Gutshof zum Shluxen is not a mountain cabin, but it's 34-room hotel in the middle of valley farm land near the village of Pinswang. From there, you could hike to Fuessen in one-hour. This is an old favorite in Rick's book, but I know others on this forum have found some favorites of their own.
