Most scenic drive from Salzburg to Fussen Germany

Hi we are traveling in early July and have read the drive to Fussen is quite scenic. We have a rental car but looking for the best route to take and how long the drive will be. Thanks for any insight. I have tried to research but am a little confused by the conflicting info I have found.

The most scenic route would be to go to Berchtesgaden, then follow the Alpenstrasse to Füssen. It wouldn't be the fastest route. ViaMichelin shows a similar route that only partially follows the Alpenstrasse and takes just over 5 hours, nonstop.

Particularly scenic parts of following the Alpenstrasse would include the town of Reit im Winkl, the stretch over the mountains east of the Inn river on the Tatzelwurmstrasse, and the stretch from Kochelsee to Garmisch-Partenkirchen along the Walchensee.

There are basically two routes:

  1. The Austrian route: From Salzburg go a few kms over the border into Bavaria (Bad Reichenhall) and from there to Lofer in Austria. Then follow B311 to Zell am See (nice lake), then B168 and 165 via Mittersill to the Gerlos pass (Kriml waterfalls) and to Jenbach. Take the motorway to Innsbruck then either B117 to Mittenwald and Garmisch [continues below] or B189 / 179 via Telfs and Nassereith to Reutte in Tyrol and finally (20km) to Füssen.

  2. The Bavarian route - is a bit more tricky if you want to get the most of it: from Salzburg follow the autobahn to Munich to the exit »Irschenberg«. The either (a) follow B472 to Kreuzstrasse and switch to B307 to lake Tegernsee, Vorderriß (nice detour to the Grosse Ahornboden) and Garmisch or (b) follow B472 to Benediktbeuren and B11 via lake Kochelsee and Walchensee to Garmisch. From Garmisch (or Oberau for variant (a)) follow B2 for a few km northbound (direction Munich), at Oberau switch to B23 (direction Augsburg) to Ettal (baroque abbey, great beer), Schloss Linderhof (detour to Oberammergau possible) and via lake Plansee to Reutte and eventually Füssen.

Both routes are rewarding, the second one takes two hours or so longer.
