Moselle/Rhine/Assmanhaussen or other Middle Rhine towns??

A few years back we took a Rhine cruise with Viking. It's the only river cruise we've done, actually the only cruise of any type we've done. It was enjoyable. Anyway, we stopped in Rudesheim which was, for the most part, lovely. We avoided the tourist shops along the river. The only thing was it was a beautiful, fall Saturday or Sunday, and Rudesheim was crowded which did take away some of the charm. When we left the next morning, I saw the town of Assmanhaussen, and it looked charming. It looked like we could have taken a gondola up to a peak and walked down into Assmanhaussen.

This fall we are going to be on the Moselle, based in Krov, for four full days. If we have enough time, which I think we will, is it worth going to Assmanhaussen? Is it as charming as it looked? We will have a car, it looks like there is a ferry near Bingen. Is it worth the effort to go over to Assmanhaussen? Are there other small Rhine towns that our cruise didn't stop on we might consider instead? I think Rick likes Bacharach which is much closer to Krov, or maybe Boppard? Or perhaps we drive to Boppard from Krov and just drive south as far as we want?

I welcome opinions. Also, while wine tasting comes 2nd or 3rd behind sight seeing and beautiful views, if folks have suggestions of small Moselle family wineries, I appreciate that as well.

My favorite Rhine Gorge towns for visiting...

Bacharach - mainly for the nice old-world half-timbered buildings

Oberwesel - 5 minutes north of Bacharach. Nice marktplatz area. Take the walk along the old town wall. Hike or drive up to the Günderodehaus for incredible views and refreshements.

Boppard - nice old town zone. Several things to see/do in town. The chairlift ride is a thrill.; walk to Gedeonseck terrace once you reach the station up top, terrific views. The waterfront is lined with cafes, restaurants hotels... nice views there. Nice wine garden not far from the station.

Braubach - main draw is Marksburg Castle. But the small old town is extra charming. Nice outdoor dining venues too. Scroll down this page for multiple photos of the town.

I think Assmanhaussen is a bit underwhelming. The chairlift from there, a walk to the monument and across to the cable car to Ruedesheim ( or vice versa ) is nice.

Boppard has a chairlift. The view of the Rhine on the way back down is my favorite.

Oberwesel has a town wall that can be walked and the red church near the train station - Liebfrauenkirche - is unique and my favorite Germany church.

Bacharach is where I have stayed 5 times.. I like it. The Malerwinkel is a picturesque section.

St. Goar has the large ruined fortress.

Not a lot to see in Assmanshausen, though the chairlift ride down is rather exciting, as it is so steep.

My favorite towns on the Rhein would be Eltville with Eberbach Monastery, St. Goar and Burg Rheinfels, Ober-Wesel, and Koblenz with the gondola ride up to the fortress. Rüdesheim can be fun, ride the gondolas up for the view, and Siegfrieds Musical Cabinet is way more interesting than it might sound.

Siegfrieds Musical Cabinet is way more interesting than it might sound

It sounds like sound is its stock in trade. I must say that I have never been to Siegfrieds Musical Cabinet but it sounds like I should - just the sort of thing I love to discover.....
