Mosel River Valley

We will be traveling along the Mosel River for about 2-3 days. I wish we had more time, but that's what we've got. It's kind of a last minute planned trip, as we will be there in about a week and a half. I will be traveling with my husband, two toddlers, and my in-laws. We also plan to just travel by train/bus, which does limit our flexibility a bit more. What cities/sights are considered "must-sees" and highlights of the area? Is there a good base city to stay in and make daytrips?

I actually just looked at the price of rental cars as well, and it's not too bad. So, we may decide to rent a car to have more flexibility. So I'd love opinions on both options.

Cochem is central, with trains going up and down the river.

We enjoyed walking around Bernkastel-Kues and Trier. While not on the Mosel, Saarburg was a nice small town. We had a rental car.

Great choice! You'll need a big car for 4 adults and 2 carseats, but a car is nice to have there. I can recommend an excellent 2BR/2BA AirBnB in Enkirch. I liked Burg Landshut. Great views from up there. We enjoyed a great meal at the Restaurant Waldschenke, which is across the river and up the hill from Bernkastle-Kues. Get the chef's platter: enough to feed the whole family!

Happy to help but I have a few questions that I hope you will answer.

I'm planning to visit the area myself in about 2 weeks. But I'm traveling solo and it's not hard to find single rooms. Your biggest issue right now is finding a place to stay for 4 adults and 2 kids, and that is a tall order sometimes. What are your precise expectations for accommodation? House? Apartment? Individual hotel rooms?

If/Once that is nailed down, I'd begin searching for places to staynear the train stations so that both the car and train choices are on the table. The train service along the main Mosel Railway is superior. WHERE does your flight land, or where are you coming from on your arrival day on the Mosel? Most airports have access to the rail system, but you might need a few tips...

Cochem is a nice, but it's also quite popular and you can expect competition for rooms and apartments there. I've stayed previously in Cochem but also in Bullay, a small town in an attractive setting roughly 8 minutes from Cochem by train, as well as in Trier and Koblenz. Many other towns have train stations there too.

Trier and Koblenz are bigger "full-service towns" with everything you might need - and more room/dining choices. At some places on the Mosel you will receive a free Guest Card which will allow all of you to use the trains for free during your stay.

A 3rd question: What specific sightseeing do you have in mind on the Mosel? Knowing this will make for better suggestions on where to stay and how to get around. I know you asked for ideas, but I suspect you must already have some places in mind if you are going there.

Cochem has the most accomodations. A holiday. apartment ( Ferienwohnung ) is a good solution with more space and usually a cheaper price. cochem.de is a good place to see what is available, not just for Cochem but also smaller towns

I appreciate all the suggestions so far! I did find a decent price for an SUV rental that would fit us all. I've booked it for now and will be able to cancel if we choose to stick with the train plan.

We are flying into/out of Frankfurt. We will be spending the first 3 days in Luxembourg and then 3 days in the Mosel Valley.

We don't drink wine, so that's not a big draw for us. We do like nature and history. Ideally, we want to keep this trip fairly low key, since we will have our two little kids. I haven't had the chance to do a ton of research on the area. It was my husband's idea. But I am interested in Trier and Saarburg. I'm not as familiar with the rest of the towns between Trier and Koblenz.

As far as accommodations, ideally an apartment would be best. That way we can all be in one place and have a kitchen. But we can also do two hotel rooms if needed.

I would consider basing out of Trier. You're much more likely to find the kind of accommodations you're looking for there. You can easily find apartments for parties your size for less than $200/night on FeWo. And from trier it's easy to go down the Mosel. Plus Saarburg is just 15 minutes away.

Saarburg is a good option for a visit. The old part of the town is on a ridge above the modern city, which is why it has the waterfall running through it. The castle has a good view, there are numerous places to sit and eat, and it's not on everybody's list. Plus you have the Rodelbahn and the Predatory Bird park for the kids.

Trier has enough to do that you could easily spend all your time there. Roman ruins, the old town, the Dom, the parks, etc. All of this takes days to appreciate. Take the kids to the palace garden behind the Rhinish Museum. For something most people don't even know exists, from the Roman Bridge go to the MBZ dealer (which is just around the corner from Karl Marx's house) and then turn right walk about 50 yards and look left. That huge WWII flak tower is almost never visited by tourists. The advantage to Trier is that it will have more to do after 5pm than any of the smaller towns, and it's actually less expensive.

Do go to Bernkastle-Kues. You'll have tourists, but also the castle, the old town, and the river. If your party like old cars visit the Zilinderhaus. If you want a really good place to sit and watch the boats while grabbing a snack or a beer, visit Kloster Matchern.

If you Google flea markets on the Mosel you'll get a list. There's one every weekend, all summer long. Also wine fests, and other events. But parking can be hard to come by. And the road along the river is very slow; the train is faster. Gas is running over $10/gal right now and that's not going to get better soon. Make sure you pay for parking, a ticket is expensive. 1 & 2 euro coins are good for this.

That is helpful information.

I assume you will rent the SUV at FRA airport, not in Luxembourg.

Saarburg is an attractive place - but it is not a Mosel River town.

"We do like nature and history. Ideally, we want to keep this trip fairly low key, since we will have our two little kids... As far as accommodations, ideally an apartment would be best. That way we can all be in one place and have a kitchen."

My suggestion: Stay in the very historic and quiet Middle-Mosel town of St. Aldegund, not far from Cochem. Unlike Trier, a lot of Mosel River villages are located in more scenic areas of the river and were NOT flattened in WW II; St. Aldegund has a very attractive collection of old-world half-timbered buildingsin one of the Mosel River's most scenic areas... it's a bit like time travel there... scroll down this page for a look:

This well-reviewed, well-priced and roomy apartment looks to be available there between 4/25 and 4/29:

From St Aldegund you can drive or take a river cruise to Cochem, Zell, Beilstein, or Traben-Trarbach. Bernkastel is close by as well. Klotten (near Cochem) is home to the Klotti Wildlife and Amusement Park. See the falconry show there.

Reichsburg Castle is in Cochem.

Burg Eltz Castle is in the area as well.

You could also visit this reconstruction of a Roman-era sanctuary at the top of Europe's steepest vineyard, the Calmont:
