Mosel area?

In September we will be taking a 3 week European vacation. At one point we will be driving from Bastogne heading south, eventually ending in the Black Forest and the Alsace. We have visited Bachrach/St. Goar area in 2006. I was thinking of stopping in the Mosel region (Cochem area) and spending a few days before heading south to the Black Forest.

Any place in the Mosel region you would recommend staying for a few nights to serve as a base for exploring the area? We like small, quaint places as opposed to cities. What attractions would you recommend we see? Any idea how long a drive it would be from say Cochem to Baden-Baden area?

Thanks for all your help

There are lots of good, small places to stay along the Mosel. One place we stayed and I would recommend in the S.A. Prüem (or Pruem) Winery Guesthaus on the outskirts of Bernkastel-Kues, my favorite town along the river. The pictures will give you some idea of what to expect.

Hi Richard,

We stayed 4 nights basically across the Mosel from Cochem in Valwig at the Hotel Rebenhof. Loved our stay. Burg Eltz is a must see to believe, in my opinion, as are many places along the Mosel... Cochem, Beilstein, Bernkastel, etc.

I would recommend using the website http://www.mosellandtouristik.de/en/culture-events/wine-festivals/
You can use the search function to locate a strassenweinfest while you are there. They happen on the weekends from late August to early October at various towns along the Mosel. Great fun.
Staying at a weingut is a good idea. Just a couple of guest rooms, breakfast, bike rentals, and maybe a tour of the basement winery. They are very reasonably priced (~ 50 euro/nt). Bike trails along the river are nice.
