Mosel/Alsace/Switzerland/Bavarian Alps. Little towns, beautiful lakes and mountains. ?'s

While this itinerary doesn't leave "appropriate" time in any one area, we are excited about getting just a sampling in each place! We have specific questions for days 2 and 4. We are leaving at end of August. Thanks in advance!

Question #1 (evening of Day #2)
What is a small, charming town with food/hotels approximately a 2 hour drive from Burg Elz to stay on our way to the Route du Vin the following day? From looking at a map, Bad Durkheim or Neustadt an der Weinstrabe seem to be options. Thoughts?

Question #2 (day/evening of day #4 )
Driving from Egulsheim, France to the "Bavarian Alps area" what is a town you'd suggest that offers lakes, mountains and beautiful scenery. (Lake Bodensee?) It looks like driving through Switzerland (Lake Walensee) could be an option. Any suggestions on activities to break up the drive?

You realize you're spending 3-4 hours a day driving? That's going to cut into your "exploring" time. A61 especially has a lot of construction going on. Use Waze to avoid the cameras.

Question 1: Both Bad Durkheim and Neustadt are very nice. Bad Durkheim is a bit off the Autobahn, and smaller. For a place even more off the beaten path, and really overlooked by most Americans, I'll recommend Freinsheim, a 1250-year-old town that still has the wall all the way around. It's about 10 minutes from Bad Durkheim. Plan on, at least, 3 hours drive to Egulsheim.

Question 2: Bodensee is the logical choice, either at Konstanz on the North side, or Dornbirn on the South. Konstanz has a great Altstadt, and Mainau, Dornbirn is at the base of the Alps and has a cable car that goes up into the mountains where you can have dinner looking out over the lake. I've stayed at both ends multiple times. There's about 2 weeks' worth of things to see between those locations.

If you stay on the south side of the lake, make sure you get the Austrian vignette for the car.

Don't bother with the Romantic Road. From Fussen head to Augsburg, then to Donauworth. From there to Dinklesbuhl, Nordlingen, and Rothenberg.

Yes…the driving is a lot but we are ok with it for this trip.

This was exactly the information I was looking for. I can’t thank you enough!

If you don’t already have a hotel in Eguisheim, I’ll throw out Le Hameau d'Eguisheim. We were given free wine tastings and it also had washing machines available for guest use, for free, including detergent.

The town itself is a no drive zone. The village parking lot is a few minutes walk away at Parking de la Mairie. Le Hameau d'Eguisheim gave us a parking pass so we didn’t have to pay.

In Bacharach we stayed at Hotel Restaurant Altkölnischer Hof. It had free parking a few hundred meters up the street from the hotel.

When you want to visit Burg Eltz its a good idea to stay in Cochem on the Mosel River for the night. Also great op. to bike and do a boattrip on the river from there as well to go to Eltz Castle

When you want go further south Neustadt or Edenkoben might be good choice for a stay

Is it Eguisheim near Colmar? Then I would go for Meersburg on Lake Constance for a visit and a stay for the night
Its on your way from Colmar to Füssen

A little hotel in a village near Meersburg also might be an option Hagnau

When you are loooking for place to stay near Füssen I can recommend Hotel Christine in Eisenberg Speiden a small village 20min nw from Fussen and Neuschwanstein Castle, The village has its own Brewery and Pub ,a church a wood carving shop
and 2 castle ruins on hill nearby
