In a few weeks my husband and I are traveling with another couple through multiple cities around Germany as well as a few days in France. Unfortunately, putting together the best travel option is taking much longer than we typically see when planning previous trips in other countries. HELP! Does it make sense to purchase a BahnCard or a German Railpass. Our itinerary is : Munich - Nuremberg- Strasbourg- Cologne - Frankfurt. Or is it best to purchase shorter trips the day of but purchase longer trips in advance? Any insight or other options is greatly appreciated!
I rely heavily on seat61.com for planning train travel in Europe. Have done so for many years.
Munich > Nuremberg: This trip is within Bavaria and can be done by 4 persons on one ticket (the "Bayern" or Bavaria Ticket) using the regional trains. €62 covers everyone. Do NOT buy it in advance. It is non-refundable... and it will not sell out, as regional trains never sell out. This trip takes 1.75 hours if you pick the right regional train. The 9:04 and 11:05, 13:04 and 15:04 RE (regional express) options on Dec. 4 (random date since you provided no date) are DIRECT and fastest. Certain other regional train trips take significantly longer.
To find regional train trips and the RE trains I suggested at the DB page you must click on "mode of transport" and select "local transport only."
The German Rail passes do not cover you to Strasbourg - only to the French border.
I would look at purchasing saver fares in advance for specific journeys for the remainder of your trip. You must be able to commit to travel at a certain date/time since these tickets are non-refundable. Prices vary immensely depending on the date of travel, the date you purchase (earlier is better) and on the time of day you travel... the smaller supply of cheapo saver tickets sell out quickly for popular travel days and travel times.)
I assume you are flying into MUC airport... Do you already know how to ticket MUC > Munich?
