More questions about our Dec.6 through Dec.20 trip to Munich

Planning a trip from Munich to Salzburg (train) over one weekend. Can a day be enough or should we plan to stay overnight. If overnight any suggestions on a hotel? For a trip from Munich to Nuremberg (train), besides the Christmas market, what must we see and can this be done in a day? For a trip to Rothenburg (train or car) should we plan for 2 days/ If overnight, any suggestions for hotel, touring, shopping, dinning? Finally, can Dauchau be done in 1/2 or a full day? We can move fast and are on limited time but still want to get the most out of this trip. We know that we will be back.
Thanks in advance for all your help

If you have almost two weeks in the area, I would strongly suggest doing the Salzburg, Munich, and Nuremberg Christmas markets on weekdays, NOT on the super crowded weekends. Salzburg's market is at its prettiest in the evenings. The TI does a nice walking tour in the mornings that shows you many of the highlights of Salzburg. It's not the cheapest option, but it's really nice to stay in the old pedestrian center of Salzburg. We especially like the Weiss Taube right in the center.

If you stay in Rothenburg two nights you can day trip to Nuremberg one day and be in Rothenburg when it's at its most charming and least crowded in the evenings. I love the simple Pension Elke. If you want something more upscale, the Reichskuchenmeister has a wonderful restaurant and nice rooms upstairs.

Dachau can be done in 1/2 day if you time it right to hit the English tour. I know one is at 11 AM. There are good directions on their website for taking the S-Bahn there from Munich.

Salzburg - We stayed at the Altstadt Hotel Weisse Taube. It was nice with a good breakfast and near the Christmas Market. We have stayed at the Bergland Hotel in another season but felt it was a bit far from the market and town center in Advent season.

Rothenburg - We like the Gasthof Goldener Greifen for rooms. It has a good restaurant for plain & tasty German food. I also liked the Gasthof Butz for meals and atmosphere. Neither is upscale; both are good and reasonable. The "Brot & Zeit Cafe" has decent pastries and good coffee; coffee breaks being important in cold weather. We like visiting the town and making photos. We visit the Reichstadt Museum as I like the landscape paintings there. If the weather permits we like walks outside the wall and down into surrounding valley. I also like the Riemenschneider Altars at both St. Jakobskirche and Franziskanerkirche (Kirche = church).

We stayed at the Glocke Weingut & Hotel on our last trip and liked it. The Hotel Raidel was once our favorite but Herr Raidel was personally struggling (health wise) on our last visit and I am not sure of its status.

You might guess that I like Rothenburg. It is so as I was never drawn to the more touristy sights.

Nürnberg is very popular at Christmas. I just look for one of the chain hotels, usually an Ibis. It is better to pass up their breakfasts and eat at the Cafe Beck. I like the meals at the Goldenes Posthorn - plain but good food especially Wursts.

We stayed in JUFA Hostel in Salzburg. It was inexpensive, but just fine - really an inexpensive hotel, with a great breakfast, and 4-5 blocks from the main square. Maybe we paid EUR 45-50 for 2 of us in a private room with a bath.

About Dachau -- yes, you can see it in a half-day, but depending on how it affects you, you might want to spend the rest of the day thinking about it rather than moving on to a Haufbrauhaus performance. (I visited Dachau with someone whose father had been a prisoner. )
