Thank you so much for your reply. Would it make sense to take a train from Mainz to Bingen and cross by ferry. If so, would you have information on how often there is a ferry

Car ferry drives continously between 5.30 am and midnight (flyer).

Tip. Some boat cruises on Rhine have Mainz as embarkment / disembarkment point (example).

Because of the way the fare networks work in Germany, it is a lot more expensive to go by train to Bingen Stadtbahnhof and take the ferry to Ruedesheim. The journey from Main to Bingen is governed by the RNN and costs 7.40 EUR per person for the ticket, then you have the ferry ticket on top of that. That is because both Mainz and Bingen are in the RNN (Rhein-Nahe Nahverkehrsverbund)

Mainz and Ruedesheim are both in the RMV (Rhein-Main Verkehrsverbund), so that is the governing fare network and the train ticket is 4.95 EUR per person.

Sounds crazy, but that is how it works in Germany.

You can go by boat since there are 2 K-D boats (8:30 and 9:30) that go from Mainz and stop at Ruedesheim, but that takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, the sights from the river are not that interesting, and I am not sure what the fare would be, but I think it would be more than either of the other 2 methods.
