We are considering a day trip to Mittenwald from Munich. Looking around generally for festivals, I noticed the Sandkerwa festival in Bamberg (a beautiful city). We would be making this day trip on a Sunday. It’s less than a two hour train ride from Munich to Bamberg and we could spend about 5 hours at the festival. Is the Sandkerwa sort of “carnivalish” (which we don’t want) and perhaps not worth our time? Any thoughts on days trips to Mittenwald vs. a day trip to Sandkerwa in Bamberg? Thank you.
"Kerwa" is one of many endings for "Kirchweih" (anniversary of the consecration of a church). So it is a more traditional festivity (see impessions from 2023) which of course has also entertaining elements, but definitely no carneval which is in Germany only celebrated in so called fifth season between Nov 11 until Ash Wednesday (mostly in February). My uncle lived in Bamberg and the various people I talked to liked the event; I never attended Sandkerwa because not my thing.
Be aware that the number of visitors might fill up trains. From Munich I would consider taking ICE train with seat reservations.
If you go for it, please write a short trip report about it in this thread. It will help other people.
Thanks, MarkK. Will do if we end up going there
FYI it really helps to know WHEN you're planning on going if you want recommendations for events like fests. I have a calendar with stuff marked for ever week from now into OCT.
