Considering a day trip from Munich and the only day we can do this is on a Sunday. Does anyone have an opinion as to which (if either) of these two locations (Mittenwald and Regensburg) would be "more open" (like shops, things to do, etc.) on a Sunday in August? Or, are they "equally closed?" I realize that Regensburg is a lot larger than Mittenwald and for that reason may be more open (e.g., more things to do) by virtue of size alone. Any opinions or thoughts are welcome about this or any other peripheral issues relating to this inquiry Thank you.
Sunday is my favorite day to walk around Munich. There's nobody on the streets before 1000 and I can get photos without a bunch of people I don't know in them. Mittenwald is a small town and probably won't have much other than the Gasthaus's open before noon. Regensburg's museums should be open; you'll have to check.
Nuremberg is more touristy, and will have some shops open, especially around the main platz, but what I'd recommend is that you drive over to Chiemsee and spend the afternoon like the Germans do, taking it easy and walking along the waterfront.
Thanks, KGC. Sounds like a solid plan which we will consider. On the other hand, there is always the Karwendelbahn in Mittenwald.
If you are traveling by car to Mittenwald on a weekend in August, finding parking for a car can be difficult. Especially near the Ferchensee and Lautersee. The lakes cannot be reached directly by car, unless you are staying at the Hotel Lautersee and have permission to drive on the non-public road. It's a tourist town, but hotels, restaurants, cafe, ice-cream places and souvenir shops should be open.
As you said Regensburg is much bigger and will have more open places by default. Plenty of parking garages near the Altstadt.
Thanks for the information, mchpp. Very useful. We would be arriving by train.
