Mittenwald lunch stop

We will be driving from Munich to Ortesei via Mittenwald. We will be traveling with my sister and her husband, on their first trip to Europe. I’ve stopped in Mittenwald briefly before, and can’t wait to share Mittenwald with them.

Can anyone recommend a good lunch spot that would be open on a Sunday? We will have a van loaded with luggage, and I’m a little concerned about leaving the car. We’ll bring the critical stuff with us. I’m probably paranoid, but losing our stuff on day 2 of 22 would not be fun! I’m picturing a cute little restaurant with a view of the mountains, with the car parked on the street in front of us. With great food and open on a Sunday. I know, I’m asking a lot!

The thing I most remember about Mittenwald is a cute little pedestrian-only street, I think it's Obermarkt, with lot of sidewalk cafes. But, then, you can't drive to it or park in the front. What I generally do in a German town is find a street with restaurant and walk down the street reading the menus until I find somewhere where I like what's on the menu, but, again, that doesn't fit well with your "park in front MO". I think there are lockers at the train station, which is within walking distance of town. It you don't have too much in the van, you could put it in lockers, then explore restaurants on foot. Again, Obermarkt is a cute little pedestrian street with sidewalk cafes.

travel4fun:

As you may recall, Mittenwald is relatively compact and easy to cover on foot, but you'll likely have to park your van at a "Parkplatz" (surface parking lot).

To follow-up Lee's comment, it appears Mittenwald's train station doesn't have luggage lockers, according to bahnhof.de.

Of course, it was nine years ago, and things can change, but in 2013, we were coming from Pfronten to Oberammergau by way of GaP with our luggage, and we took a side trip down to Mittenwald for lunch. I really believe we put our luggage in a locker while we went into Mittenwald for lunch. I see the Bahnhof website doesn't show lockers (doesn't say there aren't any, either). Here is another website, the Stations' Data Bank, for Bavaria. It says there are Schliesfächer and shows them on the platform side of the Bahnhof (suitcase in a box symbol), right under the 'R' for Reisebüro.

It would be interesting to see which site is correct.

Lee, thanks for your reply.

I completely agree that Mittenwald station might still have luggage lockers elsewhere; I last visited there in late-spring 2018 and I simply don't remember at all.

I checked bahnhof.de for a "big bahnhof" (e.g., Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, etc.) to ensure "Schließfächer" (luggage lockers) was still an actual updated entry in their database: it is, in both German and English.

Thank you all for the responses. I usually “stroll” down the streets using google earth, but I’m surprised that Mittenwald doesn’t have more than separate photo spheres. My, how technology has changed travel planning!

Germany has pretty strict data privacy laws. Streetview images in Germany are now 12 years old. Many opted out. You are not supposed to fly a UAV over populated areas either.
