Miltenberg looks lovely

The town of Miltenberg, south of Aschaffenburg and west of Wurzburg, looks lovely. It has a small Altstadt, on the Main river, looks like forests come right down to the outskirts, lovely architecture, cool towers and buildings. Looks like worth adding to the "hidden gem" list.

Miltenberg looks like a delightful town, possibly a bit large for my tastes, but who knows. Go check it out and report back.

On the positive side, it's right next to the Oldenwald, which is supposed to be a nice area.

Lee, Miltenberg actually isn't very big. Well, at least the Altstadt isn't particularly large. It is very nice, although it doesn't take long to explore.

And you are correct, it's on the eastern edge of the Odenwald. The Roman Limes ran through the ridges above the town, and you can still see some of the ruins of the watch towers. It's quite a hike to reach them, however.

I visited Miltenberg in the 1970's and have been meaning to get back. Once I planned a day trip from Aschaffenburg. We opted instead for a visit to the Aschaffenburg Residence Palace. I again have it on next year's plan as a day trip from Aschaffenburg. If you go first, I would like to hear how it went.

The Altstadt in Miltenberg is lovely, we were there in the 1970s and again in the early 2000s but if you are in the area don't miss Michelstadt, another small town with an outstanding Altstadt which is only 20 miles away. The town hall in Michestadt has one of a kind architecture and dates back to 1484. Actually there are a number of small tows in the Odenwald that have a lot of really neat half timbered buildings.

We were in Miltenberg about 10 yrs ago and thought it was a lovely little town. We were actually staying in Wertheim which I can recommend also.

The Fachwerkstraße runs through a part of the Odenwald, but I'm surprised they didn't include Michelstadt on it. Glad to see I'm not the only one of this website who appreciates the Odenwald, one of the most overlooked gems in Germany, in my opinion. It seems most tourists from North America arrive in Frankfurt and drive or train right by it on the way to Rothenburg or the Black Forest.

Miltenberg is a lovely, small town. We stayed in top floor flat in one of the old residences by the church for our very first experience of Germany in 2008 and loved it!! It is along the Main River, has some ruins on top of the hill above town, has some wonderful bakeries along the main street and the people were wonderful! It is a great place to base yourself for touring Wurzburg, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and some of the surrounding small towns. We really enjoyed our drives along the back roads to these places. We would love to stay here again in the future.
