Meersburg and Lake Constance

We are exploring different areas to stay for 3-4 nights in southern German during our trip in mid October. The Meersburg and Lake Constance area appeals to us. Has anyone else stayed there and could share your experiences? We're interested in pretty well everything - walking, history, food, wine.

I have stayed often in Ueberlingen, a lovely town directly on the shore of Lake Constance. The Hotel Ochsen is family-owned, very pleasant with an excellent restaurant.

We did a bike tour around lake Constance in 2012. We rode through Meersburg and did some sight seeing and ate lunch there. It's a lovely town and we really enjoyed touring the Castle, but I'm not sure there's enough to fill more than a day of sightseeing. Lindau was probably our favorite town that we "slept" in. 2nd favorite was the town of Konstanz. You could easily Stay in Lindau and day trip to Meersburg.

Thanks everyone. Stephen, Ben's website is an amazing source of information! Lots of love and time went into all the postings and pictures - well worth some time exploring the site. Jill and Joan, thanks for your comments. We thought Meersburg might be a good center to explore other parts of the Bodensee / Lake Constance area. The UNESCO Pfahlbauten museum (Prehistoric Pile dwellings) is nearby, as is the Zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen. It's also a hub for ferries that go to Konstanz and other locations along the lake.

For those folks who have stayed in this area, would you base yourself somewhere else?

We have stayed in both Ueberlingen and Meersburg and loved them both. We also stayed at the Hotel Ochsen in Ueberlingen and the Gasthof zum Baeren in Meersburg.

We did enjoy Mainau Island (we were there in September when the Dahlias were in brilliant bloom) and feel it is worthwhile. We also drove out to the beautiful church in Birnau.
