Medical need. Munich

I am in Munich and have a small medical problem that will require a prescription to treat. Do you have any advice on obtaining medical help? I will have to pay by credit card. It is also the weekend here. Thanks!!

Start with a pharmacy that is on the 24h rotation. They will have a green + light blinking on their outdoor sign and your hotel should know which nearby one is open.. If they can't give you a prescription they can let you know where the nearest emergency walk in room is. There usually isn't as of great as cost for an ER visit in Europe. If you are staying at a hotel they may also be able to call a weekend Dr for a house call visit for you.

Someone posted recently in another thread that in some European countries, pharmacists can dispense some medications without a prescription, so you might check the local 24-hour pharmacy. If that doesn't work and you're staying at a hotel with English-speaking front-desk staff, ask whether there's an emergency clinic.

I once (in the daytime) I went to the tourist office for info about local medical resources, because I knew I'd be able to communicate there.

Pharmacies are open on Saturdays in Germany until at least 16:00.

Otherwise you can google "Notdienst Apotheke" and you can find the address of the pharmacy that is open at night, on holidays, or Sundays. If you add in the neighborhood where you are, it will help you find the closest one. They take turns being on duty so it is worth your while to check and see which one it is. Otherwise you will walk around way too much trying to find one.

The Apotheke (Pharmacy) will be able to give you names of a Dr. that could handle your particular problem. Some of them actually have Sat. hours. If all else fails, they can give you the address of a hospital or klinik that you can go to. Not all of them have emergency rooms where you can just walk in and be taken care of.

Hi,

Ask your hotel if a pharmacy , ie, " Apotheke" is located at Munich Hbf., if that helps. For your info at Berlin Hbf the "Apotheke" located on the second floor (the floor above the ground floor), is open 24 hrs.

As a general note, Pharmacies are called "Apotheke" in German, and have a big red stylish A logo instead of a green cross. Some may display a green cross in addition for unaware people. Blinking signs are also forbidden in many many german towns, so don't look for a blinking green cross. You won't find it.

If a particular pharmacy is closed, it always display a sign by the front door "Notdienst: Foobar-Apotheke, Somewhere-Street, Next-Town". This is the pharmacy which is open over the weekend. You may need to ring a bell and wait a minute in front of this "Notdienst"-Pharmacy though, so don't give up.

Or, if you have an illness, not just a shortage of drugs (lost your pills etc.): look up the "Ärztlicher Notdienst" in the local phonebook. (Googling it also helps). Call them. They tell you which doctor is in at the weekend. In bigger cities "Ärztlicher Notdienst" is usually at one of the local hospitals, but you have to find out which one first. Google it, or just call a random hospital and ask which hospital to go.

If it's really an emergency, don't hesitate to call 112 on any phone.

I think we in the US tend to not realize the value of Pharmacies when in other countries. They typically can do much more in regards to being able to dispense a wider array of basic drugs without a Doctors prescription than what we experience here. As was also mentioned, if they do need a prescription, they know a local Doctor that can help.
