Mecklenburg/West Pomerania

I've been researching Mecklenburg/West Pomerania and the region looks worthy of visiting, with the Schwerin region perhaps as a home base area. Also, the Baltic coast with a high point the island of Rugen looks like it would make a second worthy destination. I believe the area has become popular with Germans, maybe other Europeans as well, but apparently not so much with North Americans.
I could see how if someone was visiting the Rhein, Romantic Road and Munich/Bavarian Alps that it wouldn't fit in, but for people visiting Berlin it would make a nice next stage on a trip, I would think.

I enjoyed Schwerin last summer but unfortunately didn't have time to see other cities in the area.

Possibly significant is that the weather there was markedly cooler (and wetter) than the scorching temperatures I experienced virtually everywhere else in Italy, Germany and the Balkans. It could be a nice place to be if you need a mid-summer break from the heat.

This part of Germany is - at least by foreigners - very undervisited. Wismar is for good reasons UNESCO World Heritage. Rügen is a beauty, especially the chalk cliffs north of Sassnitz, from where you can have a good walk to the Königsstuhl. Stralsund and Greifswald are also well worth a look; Rostock less so. You can easily combine it with Lübeck, one of my favourite German cities.

Hi,

I would recommend this area Mecklenburg/Viorpommern. One doesn't have to go to Berlin to access it as part of a trip unless you're doing mainly regional traveling. I've been to Schwerin twice, once from Berlin but the bus was part of the means because of train problems, ie, the bus from Schwerin to Ludwigslust, then transfer to the RB train to Berlin. The shorter way I did the first time, take the train from Hamburg to Schwerin. Both times I never heard/saw any North Americans at the stations, in town, or on the trains on whichever route. Don't expect to see any, if even by chance. They won't be going to Schwerin, Rostock, Wismar, Stralsund, Greifswald,
