We wil be in the Middle Rhine Valley on May 1. I know it is a holiday in Germany, and falls on a Sunday this year. Are there festivals in which to partake? Also, since the holiday falls on a Sunday, does that mean shops and businesses are closed the following Monday? Thanks in advance for everyone's helpful and thoughtful responses.

Pat, I asked the question before about shops and businesses and the answer is no, it is treated like a regular Monday. Sunday will have closures, of course, but most do on Sunday anyway so you shouldn't be any worse off.

I think you have to be in southern Germany/Austria to experience anything particularly fun like maypole theft. ;)

Here in Germany we unfortunately don't move holidays to next workday if they fall on a weekend
