I am most interested in hiking to an overlook of Neuschwanstein castle. Mary's Bridge is closed - is there an alternative?
If available online, please post a link with information about trail entrance/routes. In the alternative, do you think a local TI in the area could direct me?
Thanks!
I have posted this before: You can get some good views from the Tegelberg, some similar to Posters you have seen taken with a good camera (zoom), but you have to hike and the path all the way down crossed the iron bridge. I cannot remember if you can continue down into the gorge and out without crossing the bridge. The path down is not for seniors or young children as there are some difficult spots. Anyway from the Tegelberg Bergbahn park place, up to the Tegelberg on the Bahn, walk down to the iron bridge and then walk back to the Bergbahn park place through the farmer fields is a 3-4 hour hike. You can get some nice views of both castles from the Schwansee, but they are more distant (not to be confused with the Alpsee). The Schwansee also takes you away from the thousands of tourists and is a nice easy walk around the lake.
Found this on the NET. Click on the map to enlarge.
Yes, we did it in April. From the castle follow all the way to the bridge. Bypass the road closure fences and everything. Just before you hit the bridge you'll see other people climbing some steep rock. From the top you have your picture-postcard view of the castle.
This requires some good hiking boots or sneakers with very good grip though.
