I have been doing some research in advance of our Viking River Cruise we are going on in August and came across this fascinating place in the area around Koblenz. Our ship will be docked at Koblenz and a port tour of the city is given and then we have extra time on our own. I was wondering if anyone has traveled from Koblenz to Maria Laach Abbey by public transportation and if so what your impression is of the difficulty of doing so would be and the time needed to go there and back to Koblenz. I don't know how much time you will have, but it would take anywhere from a little under an hour to about 1 1/2 hours using public transportation (train then bus). The easiest way to do it would be to use the VRM website, which is for that area. I don't know where you will be in Koblenz, so I did a dummy booking to come up with the times. Leaving from Koblenz Hauptbahnhof, which may or may not be the closest train station to where you are, then you would look for trains going to Maria Laach Kloster, Glees.
