Making Munich a base for Salzburg?

Hello everyone!

My family and I are taking a three week trip to Switzerland, Germany and Austria in late August, early September. It will be my parents, my husband and I and our 3 young children. We are looking into ways to see the places we want to see and not move around too much. is it doable and worth it to take a day trip from Munich to Salzburg or would it be better to just spend a couple of nights in Salzburg on our way to Vienna?

I would recommend a couple of nights in Salzburg depending on what you want to do. My husband and I found we needed at least another day, if not two to see everything we wanted.

My recollection is its two hours from Munich to Salzburg, which makes it a little far for a day trip, especially with kids. I'd spend a couple of night there on the way to Vienna.

Yes, please stay there on the way to Vienna. Day trip to Salzburg is like a day trip to Boston from NYC. You won't have time to do much more than have lunch and buy a postcard.

I think you have to weigh your options in terms of what would be more stressful for you family given the various age groups, especially the children. If you think it easier to come back "home" to your place in Munich after a long day, then by all means, make Salzburg a day trip. I have done both, stayed in Salzburg and on another trip, just made it a day trip from Munich and it is doable, albeit, would be a long day. If, in your research, you find that there are more things you'd like to see and do in Salzburg than possible in one day, then do as others have suggested and make it part of your move toward Vienna. If you weren't considering making an extra stop (moving luggage, getting hotels rooms etc.) to see Salzburg in the first place, you may only want to do it as a day trip.
