We are going to be in Mainz in July. We would like to go to Cologne to see the Cathedral. What is the easy way to get to Cologne?
Also can you get from Mainz to Burg Eltz?

Yes. But both this trip and the other trip to Cologne would involve long train rides. And two separate trips will mean two separate round-trip bactrack journeys between Mainz and Koblenz if you are starting from a Mainz base.
It would be better to stay somewhere other than Mainz (like Koblenz) for one night to eliminate one of the round trips between Mainz and Koblenz.
An excellent castle tour that is ON the Rhine River (your Mainz - Cologne route) is MARKSBURG Castle in Braubach, 10 minutes south of Koblenz. You could probably hit both Marksburg and Cologne Cathedral on a single day from your Mainz base.

Your suggestion about Marksburg is what we will do. Can you do a round trip ticket form Cologne and get off and tour and then reboard a later train?
