We are considering a bike trip from Madeburg to Hamburg. Any thoughts on this as well as recommendations of good bike companies? We want a self guided tour.

That's a pretty long route. I would suggest seeing Magdeburg before you begin the ride. ....worth visiting.
In 2009 I spent a week-end in Magdeburg, glad I did for those 2 nights. Originally I had only planned on seeing Magdeburg as a day trip from Berlin but decided more or less last minute to do otherwise, ie, spend the week-end. The Zentrum is worth seeing. The famous famous cathedral was undergoing repair and restoration.
In the course of German history Magdeburg as a city has a dubious reputation; it suffered horribly, I don't mean just WW2, ie prior to that. US troops crossed the Elbe at Magdeburg.

Thanks for your response. We realized we might not want to bike for 8 days and are now thinking about 5 days Dresden to Magdeburg

You're welcome. I would say that too, distance-wise. Dresden is a better choice in that regard.
Depending on your time constraints, I would suggest seeing nearby Bautzen, not only for its cultural reasons but also there is a WW2 memorial there since Bautzen was one of the Germans' last tactical offensives in 1945. However, given the choice between Magdeburg or Bautzen, it's the former, of course.
