We're going to Germany in September and planning to see the sites on the Luther Trail in Wittenburg, Erfurt and Eisenach. We are planning two days and two nights. How long do we need to see Wartburg Castle? Any hotel recommendations in Erfurt?
Warburg can be done in 3 or 4 hours, including the 20 minute bus ride from Eisenach that goes every hour from the train station.
Thank you! We are thinking of doing it on the way to Frankfurt from Erfurt.
You didn't say "we have a car", but you might consider adding Quedlinburg to the trip, because it's sort of, on the way, and it's an exceptional Fachwerke and older destination. Do not overlook the oldest standing building in Europe used as a Synagogue, in Erfurt, which is largely a "city museum", less of a religious destination. (Deconsecrated hundreds of years ago.)
You don't mention Weimar, which is a very rich history destination, including Luther.
Another Martin Luther site is the Veste Coburg (Coburg Fortress) where Martin Luther stayed. There is a room in it that is kept (supposedly) as it was when he stayed in it. Coburg is about an hour from Erfurt as I recall.
We enjoyed visiting Erfurt. We stayed at the Prizeotel for 2 nights.. It is very modern and quirky in design but clean and the breakfasts were excellent.
