Luggage Storage in Germany

Hi, I'll be travelling around Germany during a month. I plan to start in the West in Heidelberg move to the East the north and finish in Frankfort but I don't want to carry my luggage during all the journey. Can I find a service that I can send and storage my luggage when I get to Germany and pick it up in my final destination when I get there? I hope I have been clear enough. Thanks for any recommendations.

So you want your luggage with you at each place you stay over, but you don't want to carry it between the train (or bus) and your hotel? It sounds like you have a LOT of luggage if that's the case. Maybe you can check Rick's excellent packing tips. Or maybe you can travel by car and keep your bags in the trunk. But I'm not aware of such a service.

Maybe you'll get better suggestions if you provide more details about your luggage load and about where you're staying and how you're getting around.

You may need to provide more information about what you want.

Just guessing, there might be several scenarios you are talking about:

  • You are travelling from one country to another with a great deal of luggage, and Germany is a stop over for a month...and you want to store most of your luggage while you are travelling about. In that case, since Heidelburg and Frankfurt are not that far apart, consider first travelling to Frankfurt and find a long term "left luggage" place.
  • You are actually interested in a place to store luggage at each destination along the way. In that case, many train stations have lockers, not the smaller ones, but that would work for storage for a day.

"Frankfort"? Frankfort is the capital of Kentucky. There are two Frankfurts in Germany. I assume you mean Frankfurt am Main, with its major airport, FRA.

... since Heidelburg and Frankfurt are not that far apart,
consider first travelling to Frankfurt and find a long term "left
luggage" place.

That was going to be my suggestion. The Hauptbahnhof in Frankfurt has lockers (Schließfächer), but I think the maximum time you can store anything in the lockers is less than a month. The Hauptbahnhof also has a Gepäck Aufbewahrung (luggage check room) next to the lockers. I believe you can check luggage there for longer periods.

On this plan of the Hauptbahnhof, luggage storage areas are in blue. Lockers are indicated by a suitcase in a box with a key above it; the Aufbewahrung is indicated by a suitcase with a smaller bag on a shelf above it.

The Bahn also has a service where they will pick up your luggage at your home and deliver it to the place where you are spending your vacation. You need to have the luggage picked up three days before you want it delivered. I've spent time in a pension in the Bavarian Alps where Germans traditional come to spend three weeks, and they bring a lot of luggage with them. On weekends, when people are checking in, I see piles of bags in the lobby with Bahn tags on them. However, I don't know much more about the service or whether they would deliver your bags to a Bahnhof Aufbewahrung. You might inquire at the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof. It could save you a trip to Frankfurt to check your luggage.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Sorry about the typo, it is Frankfurt. Sorry if I was vague about the situation. The thing is that I left home in Montevideo, spent some days in Venezuela with my family and collected a full bag of things that I'm taking back to Uruguay but I'm not using them during my trip around Germany. So what I really need is to leave that luggage stored in Frankfurt so I can go from one city to another by bus or train without carrying a lot of things that I won't need at all. Hope to be clearer and I'm checking some of the recommendation you are giving me. Thanks a lot.

@ ale....What you described calls for your luggage to be stored at the "left luggage " (Gepäckaufbewahrung) at Frankfurt Hbf. so you can travel in Germany without dragging all the things around you don't want to carry. The big coin lockers are valid for 72 hours. So, in your case, it's the left luggage facility (Gepäckaufbewahrung) you need where you check in the luggage.

It would be better to find a hotel that would let you store your bags there if you stay there at least one night at the beginning of your trip and again at the end. The luggage storage facilities at the train station and the airport are expensive! You will pay at least 7 € per bag, per day. At that price, you could mail your stuff home!
