Luggage sizes on ICE trains

We shall be traveling from Frankfurt to Munich on an ICE train. I realize that we shall have no problem with our two carry-on bags by stowing them over the seats. But, we will be forced to have a larger suitcase due to our social commitments while in Munich. My question is this.:

What size suitcases will fit in the storage units at each end of the first class ICE trains? I am about to buy luggage online, I do not want to buy something that is too big.

I've seen some pretty big suitcases in those racks. Easily 28", if not bigger. Just remember that you have to be able to carry and lift those suckers on your own. Can you lift a 50 pound suitcase?

Traveled all over Germany 3 years ago on all types of trains, ICE, IC, RE, RB, S, even a local bus. Like you, the formal events that were included in our itinerary forced us to also take one large suitcase. Never an issue, as long as you can lift it onto the train and it has a good set of wheels for the walks between the station and the hotels.

The real constraint is not storing the luggage on the train, it is carrying it. You will need to carry your bags yourself from the entrance of the station to the correct platform, which may involve stairs, Then lift it onto the train and put it in the racks. What is the largest bag you can carry as well as your carry-on?
This webpage has descriptions and photos of the luggage storage on trains; https://www.seat61.com/luggage-on-european-trains.htm

You may also encounter hotels without lifts (elevators).
