Luggage lockers Bingen hbh working now? Any other options?

Staying for one night at Burg Stahleck youth hostel in Bacharach, and hoping to take the KD line from Bingen perhaps up as far as Boppard before heading to hostel. Coming from Koln in the morning and would like to drop off my luggage (should be just a large backpack) somewhere beforehand. Don't really want to waste time and energy hiking all the way up to the hostel more than once, so leaving it there for the day not really an option.

I have read the threads on this forum that deal with this, and the best thing seems to be to travel to Bingen HBH and drop off pack in one of their lockers, enjoy the cruise, then head back to Bingen by train, picking up pack and heading back up the line to Bacharach for a look around then the dreaded climb - I know there's a taxi, but this trip is costing enough!

However, the thread that gave me this idea has a warning from the guy that went on his vacation (2012) and found the lockers all broken. Can anyone tell me whether these are working now? Or any other options for luggage storage? I hear the TI centers may take luggage but close around 5pm

Thanks!

It's Bingen Hbf (Hauptbahnhof), not HBH.

According to the Bahn website, there are NO lockers at the Bingen Hbf. That's just your first problem. The second problem is that the Bingen Hbf is quite a ways from the K-D dock. The Bingen Stadtbahnhof is the station near the K-D dock, so if you dropped your bag at the Hbf, you would either have to walk to the K-D dock or wait for the next train.

You can take your backpack on board the KD boat.

Thanks both for the tips, yes, didn't think hbh looked right.

Sounds like the lockers at Bingen Hbf have been removed rather than repaired then. Checked out the walk from the Hbf to the boats, and it seems reasonable at 14 minutes, but could be wrong and doesn't matter now anyway!

Wondered about taking the pack onto the boat, I suppose that's the best idea in the end, though it'll mean that I'm lumbered with the pack and can't move about the boat freely, I suppose there's no provision for luggage storage onboard?

Just take your pack with you. Think of all the wasted time you will have spent going back and forth. No one is going to take your stuff sitting on a ship. Have done this cruise a bunch of times and if you sit in the middle, you don't need to move around very much. If need be, take it to the bow or the stern. Can't be that tough to pick it up and move it. Lots of people store their bags downstairs, so you could do that too, just have your valuables on you. Certainly better than having to go all the way back to Bingen a 2nd time.

That settles it then, will take it on board. Thanks all for your help!

mike,

How are you planning to get from the station / dock to Burg Stahleck? I don't remember seeing any Taxi's in Bacharach but hopefully the Hostel has a Shuttle, as it's a long walk otherwise.

Well I've read somewhere else that there is a taxi (can't find any mention of a shuttle), although I do intend to walk. I should be carrying only a backpack and perhaps a shoulder bag, and although I hear it's not much fun walking up all those stairs with a backpack in summer, I hear it only takes about 15 minutes, so I don't mind as long as I only have to do it once! It will be worth it for the view. Stayed in a castle converted into a youth hostel before (St Briavels), but that one wasn't perched on a cliff above a major river!!

Thanks again everyone for your help.
