Lufthansa Strikes

Anybody recently been affected by the LH strikes. In two weeks I fly from USA to Munich with another flight to Berlin. In December I fly out of Berlin to Munich to catch my UA flight back to USA.

1) How long in advance do they announce the affected flights
2) Does LH make any effort to get you to your final destination. Guess I'll make a contingency to go to Munich's main train station to get to Berlin via train. I'm sure any flights from other carriers will be booked up fast.
3) Probably should plan to go to Munich the night before so I don't miss my flight back to US.

Any insight from anybody who has experienced a strike lately would be appreciated.

The courts ordered an end to the strikes some time ago stating it was illegal. I flew with them at the end of September, beginning of October. I flew through Munich to Venice and almost missed my connecting flight as security at Munich was a mess! At other airports it took me only 15 minutes to get through security, but at Munich it took over an hour.

Munich has the rep of being the most efficient of the European airports for transfers, especially if a time constraint arises. You will need to clear immigration inbound Munich as you are entering Shengen there, and on your way home passport control out with the additional check for the flight to the US. But both of these should be done airside and there should not be an issue making your flight. They will see that you don't miss your return flight, and should there be a delay issue on the flight to Berlin they will get you on the next plane. The strike is a non-issue.

Now whether there are stepped up security measures because of the Russian plane, that is something else entirely.

Hi Robert,

If there's a strike, they may change your itinerary.

A couple of years ago my dad was scheduled to fly Seattle - Frankfurt - Helsinki with Lufthansa. There was a strike and he was rescheduled on BA flights Seattle - London - Helsinki instead.

I don't think you should consider going on your own to Munich. They will likely charge you a sizable change fee if you do that on your own.

Please heed this advice. If you miss any segment of a ticket, the airline will void the rest of the ticket. Be sure you talk to Lufthansa before missing any flights. Don't assume that they will bend the rules because of a strike.

I am in BudaPest and just read that the Luftanza strike may be over tomorrow and it will take a few days to get back to normal. I would agree, don't try to find your own way, they will figure it out for you.

I saw how the airlines took care of those that could not out and they seemed to do a fairly good job.

Let's hope tomorrow is better.

Not surprisingly, I avoid Lufthansa if possible and until the labor issues are satisfactorily resolved.
