I wouldn't describe either as "villages", and Ludwigsburg probably wouldn't fit most people's definition of "quaint" either. More like the Versailles or Potsdam of the old kingdom of Württemberg. "Grand" is more apt.
I've only driven by Marbach, but from what I remember seeing, it looked probably more like what you probably have in mind.
Other options near Stuttgart similar to Marbach are Esslingen and the university town of Tübbingen.
Sorry, I don't know any of the hotels in the area.
Thank you Tom, appreciate the advice.
Hi,
Last summer I had intended to go to Stuttgart as a day trip where I could catch the S-Bahn to Marbach am Neckar., didn't come to pass because of a family emergency. Marbach am Neckar is where you can visit the museum/house of Schiller (of Goethe and Schiller fame) if you're interested in German cultural history. That's the main reason I would recommend Marbach, can't help with any accomodations.
Someone already mentioned Esslingen. It is a bit more than a village but has a wealth of attractive old buildings. We made a day visit there in December 2013. I can not help with hotels but intend to get back there some day when the Christmas Markets are not in season. Pictures below. Gary
