Lübeck or Lüneburg?

Lubeck has some interesting architecture. I went there from Bremen

Clear vote for Lübeck.

Lübeck of course, which is a World Heritage Site.

Both.

If you want to see a large place, then choose Lübeck.

If you want a small town, pick Lüneburg. Lüneburg is one my top favourite places in Germany. I saw it first in 1971, (MacDonalds had not yet reach Lüneburg then in July), spent 2 days there at that time, have been back there over the years numerous times.

Any specific site you want to see in Lüneburg? The churches, brewery, military memorial, museums, Zentrum,

At northamerican east coast I would also recommend both: Lubec as most eastern US community as well as Lunenburg in Nova Scotia (Canada). Close to that you can still find East and West Berlin :-)

Thanks so much for all your feedback! I will aim for Lübeck at least and try for Lüneburg as time permits. There’s also Stade, which Lonely Planet recommends, I can get there with a Hamburg transit pass. Has anyone been to Stade? Is it similar to Lüneburg? I appreciate all of your sharing your valuable travel experience!

Even if visually somehow partial similar Stade feels different to me compared to Lüneburg - a town with a long and manifold history. Believe it or not - once it was under full Swedish dominion. Stade is more similar to typical coastal small towns with little canals and typical former trade places and warehouses. Lüneburg has also an inner harbor as earlier salt city and part of Hanse but it misses to me the coastal / "rough" character.

Not really an answer to your question but I went through Stade on the train from Hamburg Hbf last May en route to Cuxhaven, when doing a day trip in Cuxhaven.

The Zentrum looks very interesting historically. That train stopped in Stade. Surely, it is a town that I should visited in the 1980s, when I did have the time then.
