looking at hotel prices near the city center, not in the old town are like 400 euro a night, ???
Any experienced advice, would be helpful of where to stay, at less then, a fortune a night,

I never stay inside the old city walls. And while I have stayed around the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) I can't recommend that due to the construction which will still be ongoing the time of your visit. look north of the city center, near the University and museums, and find a place near a Sbahn or Ubahn stop (they usually parallel the English Gardens). That way you can be in the old town in just a few minutes. My other preference is southeast of the old town, across the river. Again there are some really decent places to stay that won't be quite as spendy. But you also have to realize you're going to be in the city at a high tourist time, and you'll have competition for any available rooms.

John,

I've stayed at Hotel Uhland in the past and was extremely pleased with it. It's been a few years since I stayed there however, and hopefully nothing has changed. It's not right in the city centre but I didn't find it overly difficult to walk to the main sites. With the popularity of travels in Europe these days, I'd imagine that early booking would be prudent.

Were staying at the Euro star Book not far from the train station for two nights in April. We've stayed at Euro star hotel in Berlin and we were very pleased. For two nights for three of us it is $512. It also includes breakfast which is amazing if it is anything like the one in Berlin. Euro star is out of Spain. Good travels!

Your dates indicate 5 nights, not 3. I looked for your dates at Hotel am Viltualienmarket and they have are for $217 per night. We have stayed there 3 times and really like it. The location is great, the rooms are spacious and well kept, and the staff are very helpful.

All I can recommend is that you find a hotel with good AC, as it can really be hot and humid that time of year. We have had good luck with Motel One that has several locations in the city.

Not sure how many are in your group but I stayed at Morel One and it was decent. Splurged on a balcony room but it was a decent size even if the bathroom was a bit compact. It doesn’t have all the luxury of a regular hotel but many many Germans stay there so it must be a good value.
