Looking for input on transportation options from Kleve to Amsterdam

My wife and I will be traveling with our boys August 2019 to Kleve, Germany. We are looking to find out how exactly to take the train from Kleve to Amsterdam. We want to be into Amsterdam central station no later than 14:30. Our boys are 15 and 12 years old. We will be dropping off our rental car in Kleve. What are the options out there for us to get around.

There is a station in Kleve, but it is at the end of a line coming from Germany, there is no rail connection towards the Netherlands.
According to the DB website ( https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml ), Kleve to Amsterdam by train would take 4 hours and involve doubling back to Düsseldorf or Krefeld.

Option - Don't drop off your car in Kleve, instead choose somewhere on the rail line from Germany to Amsterdam: Köln (Cologne), Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen.

Option 2- the nearest large place west of Kleve is Nijmegen. A major rail junction with good connections to Amsterdam. I googled "Bus Kleve Nijmegen", and there appears to be a bus, that runs to Nijmegen station hourly and takes ~1 hour.

Nijmegen to Amsterdam is 1½ hours, total 2½ hours.

Thank you. We would be dropping it off in Kleve to avoid the steep drop off fee. We are catching the overnight ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle. I'll look up that bus combo that you had mentioned. I had seen it before but couldn't find it in terms of availability and pricing.

Leif, "availability and pricing" - I suspect it is just a local bus, pay the driver.

A long long time ago I worked in that area, stayed just outside Kleve and commuted daily to just over the Dutch border, which is how I know Nijmegen is just to the west over the border.

It is a regular regional bus, run by Connexxion, which does the buses in the Nijmegen area.
I have, however, difficulties to find out the price for this trip. Kleve being in Germany, it doesn't figure on the Dutch public transport planner, which generates the ticket prices. I guess it won't be more expensive than EUR 10.

I went to Kleve once, took a day trip there from Düsseldorf in 1989.

The Reichswald battle took place nearby. If you're interested in seeing a WW2 site, the Reichswald war cemetery is there in Kleve, where both German and British soldiers are buried. Note the difference in their respective cemeteries.

Why not do the obvious and look at www.bahn.com. It shows numerous connections from Kleve to Nijmegen Centraal (Bus #SB58, most departing at minute 01 and 31). Operator is the local transport authority Niederrhein (NIAG). Buy your ticket at the vending machine in Kleve or from the driver (cash only). A flyer with all connections can be found here and here.

If you are only going to Kleve as a car drop off point, I would choose somewhere else that does have trains to the Netherlands: Köln (Cologne), Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Oberhausen. Possibly even Aachen (which is worth a stop).

We're going to Kleve to visit the war cemetery where my wife's uncle is buried as he was involved in WW2

Stick around to see the town of Kleve after seeing the Reichswald war cemetery. It's one of the British Army's WW2 cemeteries in Germany, other ones are in Kiel and Celle.
