What's wrong with plain ol tights instead of silk underwear?

There is nothing wrong with tights. I’ve taken tights on trips several times. Since I live in a place that has very little truly cold weather, I don’t own long underwear silk or otherwise and I wouldn’t buy it just for a trip. I do own opaque tights.

You could do both. I sometimes use the silk long underwear (any light weight will do) as an added layer when I’m sleeping if the room is cold and tights really aren’t comfortable in that scenario. I get cold/chilled easily, so consider that when you make your decision. We have run into cold & wet weather April-July, so check the forecast before you leave.
