I'll be in London from Canada during end of August or early Sept '17. I would like to visit the u-boat museum in Laboe near Kiel. Does anyone have advice as to making travel arrangements. e.g. heathrow to Hamburg? , which are the best days to travel, how to get to Laboe from the airport, . hotels etc. I'm only going to be there two or three days and then back to London.
Hope someone has made the trip before and can help.
Ryanair flies from Stansted, Easy Jet from Luton and Gatwick, BA and Eurowings from Heathrow to Hamburg. Might be best to rent a car to get to Laboe.
If you ever get to Chicago, there is a German U-boat at the Museum of Science and industry.
Hi,
I made the trip to Laboe once (so far) but from Kiel where I was staying at the hostel in Sept, 1977. What is in Laboe is the Naval War Memorial (Marine Ehrenmal) which houses a naval war museum on the naval warfare in both wars, and the U-Boat is there, (on the beach), which you can walk through. Notice the historical flag display, from 1867-1949. How I got there? I was driven from Kiel Hbf. The place can be reached by public transport too. There is a ferry ca 30 mins walk from Kiel Hbf, take the ferry and the bus. There is a bus leaving for Laboe from the Hbf, but check on that. If you climb all the stairs to the top of the monument, you'll see a lovely, fantastic view of the Schleswig-Holstein landscape. It was like that 40 years ago.
Hi,
There is also the U-Boat memorial in Möltenort nearby. I don't know if it covers both wars. If you have the time to track down another site on the Baltic side, go to Stralsund to see the naval museum (Marine Museum) which also covers naval war history.
