Our family of six is going to Europe for the first time this summer. What do y'all recommend for the best way to travel from London to Berlin? We are thinking by train to see more of Europe. What do y'all recommend for the best way to travel from Berlin to Munich? Thanks for the help.
Fly to Berlin. If you're visiting London first and are not booking Berlin as part of your flight to Europe; then see www.skyscanner.com for intra-European budget airlines. From Berlin to Munich, train is easy and direct. Book advance-discount tickets through the DB link at How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online, probably available now.
I'd also recommend flying to Berlin and train to Munich.
For example, you could use an easyJet flight from London Gatwick to Berlin. Fares on budget airlines tend to increase as the flight fills, so buying early is an advantage. Tickets are usually non-refundable and non-changeable once purchased. With any budget airlines, be sure to read their Terms & Conditions carefully, especially related to luggage.
For the trip from Berlin to Munich, there are numerous ICE departures, some of which are direct (no changes). Travel time is about 6H:15M for those trains.
As this is your first trip to Europe, I'd highly recommend reading Europe Through The Back Door prior to your trip. That has lots of information on how to travel well in Europe. After that use the country or city-specific RS guidebooks to plan sightseeing, hotels, transportation, etc.
Take the direct ICE connection from Berlin to Munich, with a short stopover in Erfurt. Rick Steves likes the city:
