Logistics of Rental Car Return, Getting around Frankfurt with Luggage

Trip is next December, early to mid month. From Rothenburg ob der Tauber, planning to drive to Frankfurt, return our rental car, stay overnight in the city, then take the train to Berlin the next day. Please let me know if these details sound feasible?

  1. Return rental car at the Airport - seems like the best option for me as I don't like city driving. Hoping getting from Car Return to Airport S-Bahn is easy?
  2. Take the S-Bahn to Hauptwache - hoping to stay in this area vs staying near the main train station.
  3. S-Bahn from Hauptwache to Main station the next day for our train to Berlin - easy enough with all our suitcases etc?

Is there anything I need to know that I'm missing?

Thank you!

The big rental car companies return at Terminal 1. Very easy to get to S-Bahn as it is under Terminal 1. S-Bahn is easy with a reasonable amount of luggage (e.g. you can easily manage on an escalator vs needing to take an elevator).

Is there any reason to return to Frankfurt? Why not drop it off somewhere nearer to Rothenburg, maybe Würzburg or Nuremberg?

It might be easier to forget about the car & use the train instead.

I could look into Wurzburg certainly - my husband wanted to stop in Frankfurt but I'm beginning to think it's not a great stop.
The direct train to Berlin was nice, from Wurzburg looks like a transfer in Nuremburg.

We do want the car just for getting to Rothenburg, it's just easier from everything I've read.

Do the car rental. You're in Germany. I just get tired of pushing the trains. Nothing wrong with renting a car. You see a lot more with a car then trains. People don't realize the places they miss and the true time they waste with trains.

I love Frankfurt and visit it and the vicinity frequently - but it seems you're adding lots of miles and time for a small return - just the overnight as it looks to me.

Is there something in particular your husband is after in or near Frankfurt?

from Nuremberg the train to Berlin takes 90 minutes less on average - it is over 4 hours from Frankfurt (Main) Hbf.
