Any suggestions for places to stay in Munich that are safe and affordable (under $200 per night) for mom and two preteens? I prefer locally run, smaller hotels versus hotel chains. Thanks!
How many beds do you need and what time of year?
It would be early June and we can have a double bed with a single or three single beds. Or even bunk beds.
Take a look at Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. We have stayed there a few times, always with 3 people. The rooms we have had are quite spacious and the beds are singles, not bunk beds. The rates are just a touch over $200, but the location is great as is the hotel itself.
We have also stayed at Hotel Lux in a triple room and loved it. The rate was similar, and location was also great. Note that this one does not have a lift, if that matters to you.
Mikliz97, we have stayed at Hotel Am Markt. Is that the same as Hotel Am Victualienmarkt? Across the alley from a wurst restaurant? I agree, a wonderful location!
One option could be MK Hotel in Haidhausen (great location):

They have triple rooms (see the pictures).

traveler guy--No, they are two different hotels. The names are confusing, I know:)
Thank you for the ideas! So far everything is booked or over budget. I will continue looking.
Would you consider a family room in a hostel? They are private, just your family in the room. Also, are you looking city center or out into the suburbs a bit?
Augsburg is a common alternative for escaping high prices in Munich. It's an historic city on the Romantic Road route with excellent connections by train into Munich's central station (45 minutes.) You might look at this Augsburg option, which is just steps from the railway station. Rooms have a/c and breakfast is included within your budget.

My recent experience was at the Hotel Ost am Kö in Augsburg. Great hotel with an excellent breakfast. It's a bit more distant from the station, however. A triple (2 twins + 1 sofa bed) there for the June dates I checked goes for $342/2 nights including breakfast and free cancellation:

Getting into Munich and back on a Bayern Ticket day pass would cost €34/day... the children ride for free when accompanied by an adult at this price. This is a direct train ride on the regional express trains. The day pass also includes any and all public transport you might need within the city of Munich - buses, trams, subway, etc. Sample train schedule from and back to Augsburg: 9:35 - 10:19, return 19:35 - 20:20.

Thank you Russ, that is very helpful. I did figure out after going back and forth by email with a hotel, that there is a large conference coming into Munich during our dates. This is causing the inflation of prices and limited space. I am learning as I go. I appreciate the idea of staying outside of town. I will look into that idea.
