We are traveling from Salzburg to Munich on a Saturday in June and need to return our car on Sunday at the train station in Munich. We really don't want to stay in Munich on Saturday night, so does anyone have a suggestion for lodging outside of Munich?

There are many options. You could, for example, stay at one of the lakes: Prien am Chiemsee (boat trip to Herrnchiemsee) or at the Ammersee - Dießen is beautiful and untouristic (visit Andechs in the late afternoon and have a farewell beeer).

A hotel that I like in the eastern Munich suburbs is the Bauer https://www.bauerhotel.de/en/home/ in Feldkirchen. Easy free parking, easy access by autobahn and train, fabulous breakfast, excellent restaurant. Our room (three times they have put us in the same room, they know us - nice) has a balcony and no air conditioning but it is unnecessary, especially in June.
I'll be back there in June myself. Don't take my room.
Thank you for your suggestions. I will double check on the car rental place being open on Sunday, but they said it was. There is nothing "wrong" with staying in Munich, I just prefer something outside of a big city.
sla019: Do you have a preferred place to stay in Munich that is relatively close to the train station that isn't too expensive?
Well, I live in nearby Augsburg and therefore rarely have the need to stay overnight in the city. But if I do, I prefer the MotelOne at the Ostbahnhof (Munich East, stop of the S8 to the airport; price with - excellent - breakfast about € 100). Maybe that suits you too.
Another question is whether you could return the car on Saturday evening at the airport and spend the night in nearby Freising. It is a 20 min bus ride away and a pleasant historic town with a decent selection of hotels.
We stayed in Dachau and took the train into Munich.
