Lodging in Munich

Hi, we are 4 seniors who plan to spend 4 nights in Munich next August. Would appreciate any recommendations for great places to stay. Thanks!

A little more information on your budget, interests, and mobility will help people give you better
suggestions.

There are multiple hotels in the vicinity of the main train station. These tend to be 3*-ish hotels
at a moderate price, in an urban neighborhood.

In the center of downtown Munich, around Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, etc, will generally be
the nicer 4* and above hotels.

Public transport in Munich is excellent, so really, any hotel close to a S or U Bahn line is not a
bad location.

Thanks so much for your reply. We lean towards three or four star places, prefer inns and more European to American hotels. We are all in good condition and enjoy walking. Would love to be where we could easily get to the train station and to local attractions since it will be our first time in Munich.

For 3* hotel near the train station, there are a couple of Kings Hotels that are good for the price.

For 3-4* in the Marianplatz area, the Platzl, Cortiina, or Schlicker.

Do not stay around the main train station in Munich. It's under construction, and the neighborhood is not the best. What you want to do is find a place north of the old town, around the University and Museums, near to the Ubahn that runs parallel to the English Garden. Or south of the river along Rosenheimer Strasse where you have direct access to the transportation system and can get into old town in 5-10 minutes.

We really like Hotel Torbrau. They have a great breakfast and location to subway and main historical areas are great.

I lived in Munich and travel there often for work still and definitely do not stay near the main train station. This is akin to telling people to stay near the airport in the US, plus the station is a huge construction site right now.

My standard hotel in Munich is the Motel One chain. This is a modern, Munich based hotel chain with locations all over Europe now. Rooms are clean and basic, but the lounges are excellent and a great hang out space especially if you are traveling as a group. They also have a very reasonable cancellation policy.

I prefer the Haidhausen and Ost locations (because I used to live in that area) but Sendlinger Tor location is also nice and very central.

I stay opposite of Munich central station in a 3 star place....Eden Hotel Wolff. That's my new choice.

Thanks so much, everyone, for your thoughtful replies. We ended up booking at the Hotel Schlicker which had wonderful reviews and we were able to get a good rate through Expedia. Now we have to wait 9 months to enjoy!

Hotel Antares is great. Walk to Marienplatz or UBahn. Quiet neighborhood. Great breakfast. Affordable. Bathroom/shower (updated/modern, with hair dryer) in every room. Use their website for better rates. They take cash or card - don't have to pay until you arrive or depart.
