lodging help for weekend trips

hello all,

I was wondering if you experienced travelers could help me figure out a plan for short weekend lodging throughout Europe. My husband and I will be staying in Cologne for our three months abroad,. We are planning long weekend trips (3 days) to various local areas in Germany and surrounding cities/ countries, Amsterdam, Belgium, France, I'm just curious what are the best ways to book 2 -3 night stays in a city - we don't have set dates for our weekend plans, so mostly short notice-impromptu trips.
Is Air Bnb a good option as well as other online booking sites? any help is appreciated.

we are fine with staying a 3-4 star hotel, definitely not interested in staying at any communal or hostel type lodging.

AirBnB has been outlawed in some places in Germany, in part out of concerns about housing shortages for locals; you can book hotels in other ways, like through the standard booking engines you might already be familiar with. HRS is a popular option in Germany - click on the German flag in the upper right corner to reach the English-language pages.

Are you using the trains for these outings? The train system is great, and you can probably save some €'s this way. But you'll need to search by proximity to the rail station (Bahnhof, or Hauptbahnhof, or DB logo on the search map) so that you don't book something inconvenient.

Thete is a wide range of places to stay between 3 star hotel and hostel ! Virtually every German town has a website. Most of them have a tourism section that usually will list all the town's accomodations. I have used these sites ( and before the internet, brochures from the towns ) for 30 years.

Hi Murissa- I assume this 3 month trip is for work or school or to visit relatives or because the digs are free- why else would you spend 3 months in Cologne.... At any rate, you will undoubtably interact with the locals. They will be a good source of information for your trips. And the trains are usually very good- tickets can be very inexpensive if purchased several months in advance. So cheap that you could throw them away if you insist on being spontaneous. Regional tickets are also very inexpensive for trips within Germany.

Have a great trip!!!
