lodging Dresden for Christmas Markets

We'll be going to the Christmas markets (looking forward to visiting the medieval christmas market), and would be thankful for lodging recommendations.

I've stayed in Aparthotels an der Frauenkirche. It is in the middle of the most touristy street in Dresden but you are literally right next to the church and within easy walking of a lot of sites. I haven't been to the Christmas markets in Dresden but I believe they are right there on the Münzgasse.

The accommodation itself was at the time quite new, and of a good standard, with kitchenette and washing machine in each apartment. Would stay there again any time.

I second lavandula's recommendation. Right in the middle of all the Christmas markets. The medieval one takes place in the Stallhof, the Renaissance stable courtyard of the Royal Palace, about 200 m from the apartments. Right in front is the Anno 1900s market at Neumarkt square and there is another small market along Münzgasse down to the river. Striezelmarkt, the largest, oldest and most famous, is just around the corner at Altmarkt square. I highly recommend two other markets: Augustusmarket across the river along pedestrian zone Hauptstraße and the cute small market in district Loschwitz (check if it runs during your stay, only from 1st through 3rd Advent.)

Rates in general rise for Christmas market season, especially in the old town. If you don't mind the expense then I highly recommend the Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe.
