Lodging (and hiking) recommendation in Fussen, Mittenwald, Garmisch, Reutte, Oberammergau area

We are looking for lodging for three nights in the middle of our 10 day trip that might be recommended as a base for day hikes or bike rides. The ideal hotel, inn, or B and B would offer an opportunity to just relax on site as well as be located near trails, restaurants and beer gardens. Does anyplace come to mind that you would recommend?

Our trip will be in September. We will have a car. Earlier in the trip we will be in the Rhine and Black Forest areas. Later we will be in Munich for two nights before heading for home. We don't intend to tour the King Ludwig castles but would be open to hiking nearby areas that might be scenic as well as offer some photo opportunities of them. Challenging hikes at altitude would also be welcome .

I'm picturing rising early to a healthy breakfast, then a scenic hike with picnic lunch, afternoon nap in the sunshine followed by a few tasty local beers (maybe another nap!) before a hearty dinner and asleep by 8 o'clock! Are there any specific lodgings in this area that might suit us? What town do you recommend for hiking opportunities? Thanks!

Are you in good shape? If so, consider a hike up to one of King Ludwig's weirdest and least visited residences, the Königshaus am Schachen, where he would take his... um... special friends. You can reach it from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but it's not the easiest hike and it will take most of the day. It's only accessible by hiking. Other popular hikes are the Partnach gorge and the ascent all the way to the summit of the Zugspitze (this is a LONG walk).

The Fraundorfer is a very popular Gasthaus, for good reason. Live music almost nightly.

PS- Unless you're a die-hard Rick Steves disciple, don't even think about Reutte.

Thanks Tom, for your helpful response. We are in good shape and are willing to work for a unique experience or a rewarding view. Your suggestions appeal to us and we are now planning to base in GP.
